About the Prune Juice Follies
Founded in May 1993 by Helen Hart, better known as
Zircon Zelda, The Prune Juice Follies is an entertaining
group of senior (over 50) men and women dancers and singers dedicated to keeping
active and healthy, having fun, and making other people happy also. Their credo
is "Make Everyone Happy". Very few of the performers are "retired"
professional entertainers, but most of them are people who have always had the
urge to perform in some way, but opportunity passed them by until their senior
years.
All of the dancers came to Helen for a tap class or two or three, and
found themselves wanting more and more, and eventually honed their talents to a
professional level and were able to join the performing company. Now, at long
last, these dreamers are finding their niche in the ever-popular zany, old-time,
Broadway-type musical comedy shows. These shows bring bellows of laughter and
leave entire audiences humming and toe-tapping long after the curtain has closed.
After the inception, Helen was called for, and prepared, a complete one-hour
show performed a short three months later. The Company was able to do this
because of their dedication to lengthy daily rehearsals and Helen's knowledge of
theater, music, and her more than fifty years of teaching tap dancing. Eight
years later The Prune Juice Follies have more than eighty
numbers in their repertoire. Helen started with eight women and one man; four of
them are still with the Company (OK, so they are chained to the wall in the
rehearsal hall!).
Seriously, Zelda says: "These hard-working men and women (now over 30 in numbers) give me over 10 hours of weekly non-stop energy - singing and dancing - in rehearsals. If it weren't for them and their selfless dedication and commitment, there's no way the 'Follies' could have achieved this level of success and professionalism."
The Prune Juice Follies command notoriety for
many reasons, but their purpose is not just to display their own expertise;
their goal is not only to have fun themselves, but to see to it that everyone
in the audience is able to laugh, forget his worldly cares for a while, and just
plain enjoy himself. Audience participation is a hallmark of the Follies which
ever increases the demand for their shows. Almost everyone possesses an inner
desire to "ham it up" sometimes. These happy "Prunes" like
nothing more than to get "volunteers" from their audiences up on stage
in full costume to join in a number. Wherever they perform, their audiences love
The Prune Juice Follies not only for their flamboyant
productions but also for providing the all too rare experience of just being able
to "let down their hair" for a rollicking good time.
